TEHUTI/online: Temple Walls
The question of astronomy in Kemet is discussed quite frequently. The majority of Egyptologists write that there was very little if any science in Kemetic knowledge of the planets. I will quote Prof. Jean Yoyotte from the foreword to 'Egyptian Calendar: A Work for Eternity' by Dr. Anne-Sophie von Bomhard (pg. ix) to help us all understand this issue with clarity. "Where modern man wants to form an opinion of the ancient Egyptians' knowledge of celestial mechanisms and the theories which they derived from them, he will have a difficult time because of the immense proliferation of legends and mythical parabolae, and will always find several different representations for one and the same subject or event. This "diversity in approach" was the Egyptians' roundabout way of describing the mysteries of the divine and the cosmos by poetic names and tales, which they use to talk to the gods (NTRW) who determine the course of the cosmos and man's destiny. Yet, at the same time, this mystic poetry encapsulates a logical, coherent cosmography and its implicit physics." To summarize Prof. Yoyotte our current day religious, spiritual, and scientific beliefs hinder us from fully understanding the beliefs of the people of ancient Egypt (I will refer to ancient Egypt as KMT). Modern spiritual and scientific thought shares the dictum that we have more knowledge and wisdom than our ancestors. This basic belief is completely opposite of Kemetic thought. In KMT it was believed that in the ancient times NTRW lived in KMT. The greater truths were given to the people in ancient times. It was very important to consult the texts hoary with age and wisdom to get an indication of how we should live a life. When doing this they saw evidence of the NTRW in all things. The NTRW were in everything and everywhere. If we want to understand the Kemetic knowledge of astronomy or "celestial mechanisms" we should make the effort to understand the knowledge of KMT as the people of KMT understood it. Only then can we truthfully interpret the writings into our modern day consciousness. To quote Jeremy Naydler from the epilogue of 'Temple of the Cosmos' (pg. 283): "For example, modern scholarship can describe ancient Egyptian cosmology as if it were the outcome of a similar aspiration to that which lies behind modern cosmology but has simply been proved false, thereby ignoring the question of how such a cosmology could be true for the ancient Egyptians. Ancient Egyptian history is studied as if it were possible to extrapolate our modern reality principle backward in time ad infinitum, without any conception that the historical event might have been different in ancient times than it is today. In much modern Egyptology there is both a lack of psychological sophistication and an ignorance of both metaphysics and esotericism, which has the inevitable consequence that the spirituality (and the wisdom - ed. note) of the ancient Egyptians must remain a closed book." By giving our attention to the experiential life and consciousness of the ancient Egyptians, influenced neither by a desire to return to their world nor in the thrall of modern presuppositions about what is important and interesting, true or false, real or illusory the significance of ancient Egypt to us today may be felt. It is a culture and mentality from which we grew estranged as we developed a different kind of soul-life in which the need to distinguish self from other, inner from outer, subjective from objective became ever more paramount." The egyptological practice of defining knowledge by our modern day conception of science, philosophy, etc., etc., places veils over our eyes and clouds our minds before we begin examining the texts. With the ideas of Prof. Yoyotte and Dr. Naydler guiding our studies an analysis of the planets, stars, decans, and constellations has the possibility of opening new avenues of thought that has been ignored or ridiculed by those who have done most of the translations.
The inclusion of so much religiosity and spirituality into the writings gives the Kemetic calendar the surface appearance of being weakly astrological in the modern day western sense. Looking beneath the surface we find that the precision and correctness of the Kemetic calendar is superior to anything modern day scientists have devised. The people of Kemet did not separate the spiritual from the scientific. Understanding this integration of all aspects of existence is a major key to our full understanding of KMT. In Egyptian Astronomical Texts; Book 3; Chap. 3: pp.175-182 Neugebauer and Parker give the transliterated names for the five planets in our solar system by the people of Kemet. In The Egyptian Calendar: A Work for Eternity by Dr. Anne-Sophie von Bomhard pp. 72-74 the glyphs and the transliterations for the names of the planets are given. An examination of the names of these planets gives you the qualities of the planets. The 'star charts' from the Ramesseum and Nekhtnebef Sarcophagus (both in EAT) gives their location in this solar system. Afterwards the 2004 transit of Venus and the Sun is given an astrological analysis using Kemetic definitions. Read the following, check the sources and let's discuss this.

The Kemetic people knew all the planets in our solar system. These five were the most important. I find it interesting that these are the same five planets used in Vedic astrology. Vedic astrology is considered by many people to be more precise than the astrology practiced in western civilization.

Decans, hours, cosmography, and geodesy pg. 64
The division of the night into 12 units has its origin, as O. Neugebauer and R. A. Parker have demonstrated, directly in the choice of 36 stars and the interval of 10 days between the appearance of each star1. It is this division of the day into 24 hours that we still use today2.
One may go even further, if the relation between the Earth’s rotation (around its own axis = duration of the day divided into 24 hours) and orbit (around the sun = duration of the year with the successive appearance of the 36 decans) is to be taken into account. In the course of a year, a new decan culminates in the 12th hour every 10 days (see fig. 1) while the preceding decan marks the 11th hour and so on. But as the Earth rotates around its own axis during the night, the same decans will, in fact, define the hour’s interval (see fig. 2).
There clearly emerges the intention to create a direct relationship between the hour (as a segment of time of the earthly rotation) and the year (the time of the terrestrial orbit): during one night, a new decan culminates every 60 minutes (this is the length of the hour): but during a year, the progression of a decans culmination is only of 40 minutes. The equivalence could be established3 thanks to the duodecimal system, i.e. by determining the duration and the number of hours according to the number of days in the year (time of orbit revolution). Only the number of 360 days could create a simple relationship between the year (360 days), the month (12 months of 30 days), the day (360th part of the decanal year with 12 hours per day and 12 hours per night, and the hour (24th part of the time of rotation).
Taking a look at the degrees of longitude it becomes clear that due to the rotation of the Earth the culminating point of a star (or the sun) will be seen successively on different longitudes, moving along the Earth from East to West. For each additional degree of longitude westward the culmination point comes 4 minutes later. In addition, any star will see its culmination advance (as an average) by 4 minutes per day due to the Earth’s orbit. Obviously there can be no room for happenstance: the data obtained through observation of the phenomena pertaining to the Earth’s orbit have controlled the choices which have guided not only the manner of dividing the time of rotation (i.e. into hours) but also that of 3600 to divide the circle4, after the number of decans, which is itself related to the 360 days. All astronomical definitions implied by the decan are closely linked to terrestrial5 measuring and to cosmography6.
Footnotes
1. O. Neugebauer and R. A. Parker EAT 1, pg.116
2. This is the origin of our time zones
3. The progress of one and the same decan through the year of 360 days is calculated as follows: 40 min. x 36 = 1440 minutes = 24 hours. The equivalence was possible on the condition that the epagomenoi were not taken into account. This is very probably the essential reason for which they were kept apart and defined as “in addition to the year”. It is amusing to notice that if the additional progress during the 5 epagomenoi (=1/2 decade) is taken into account, 20 minutes must be added, resulting in 1440 + 20 = 1460 minutes, i.e. the same number as the Sothic tetraery or the years of the Sothic period.
4. Even if the terms of “degree” or of “angular velocity” have not been found or identified in the Egyptian texts, one can only acknowledge that these notions have been well understood and utilized.
5. Longitudes are measured as 0 – 1800 East and West, latitudes in 0 – 900 North and South. The degree, like the hour, is divided into 60 minutes.
6. Which seems to accredit Greek assertions that the Egyptians had great astronomical knowledge, and had created cosmography and geodesy.

Rare Transit of Venus
(Reprinted from the MAAT-TEHUTI discussion group)
This is my analysis of
the 2004 transit of Venus & the Sun from a Kemetic
perspective. Let me establish some ground rules in advance:
1. The generally accepted
definition we assign to Venus as the "planet of love" is not of Kemetic origin.
In Webster's Unabridged Dictionary Venus is described in several ways: a) In
Roman mythology an ancient Italian goddess of spring, bloom, and beauty later
identified with the Greek Aphrodite as the goddess of love; b) anciently or
poetically called Lucifer (a latin term) as the morning star or Hesperus (a
greek term) as the evening star. These names and definitions are roman, latin,
or greek. They have been altered and minimized from their Kemetic origins so I
will not use these definitions in this analysis. Kemetic culture and society
predates them all.
2. The people of KMT (& the
entire African continent) saw no distinctions between what we call scientific
and spiritual concepts. Every story, report, civil document, ritual, &
mathematical calculation made references to one or more NTRW. The qualities and
powers of each
NTR is an important part that gives meaning to the writings.
Popular media has reported
that currently the planet Venus is, astrologically and astronomically, in
transit with the Sun. This transit occurs approximately every 121.5 years.
During a transit energy flows from the Sun to Venus. In addition to being in
transit with the Sun the planet Venus is also in
conjunction with the Sun. During a conjunction energy from the Sun burns the
toxins off Venus. Currently, June 23, 2004, Venus is also retrograde as well.
(It will not go direct again until June 29, 2004.) The combination of transit
and conjunction with a retrograde movement gives a distinct flair to the mix of
cosmic energies flowing between these two bodies. How does this affect us on
earth? What can we do to get the most from them? An analysis of these energies
from a Kemetic vantage point should reveal deeper more precise meanings than
modern day astrology informs us. (On June 18th and 19th 2004, Bobby Hemmitt said
the Venus transit meant the return of the feminine. I agree
with his understanding only
because we’re shifting into Aquarius which signifies feminine energy and it also
means much, much more.) Adopting a Kemetic perspective requires a shift in both
our knowledge base and paradigm.
In KMT the essence of all
life is
NTR. The
NTR of the Sun is Ra. The Sun is not Ra. The
NTR Ra is the
energetic principle that activates, operates, and directs the Sun. The
NTR of
Venus is Ausar. Venus is not Ausar. The
NTR Ausar is the energetic principle
that activates, operates, and directs the planet Venus. Ra is the life force of
the Sun. Ausar is the lifeforce of Venus. Ra sends its lifeforce to Earth. There
are stories from KMT that inform us Ausar taught agriculture and civilization to
the people of Earth. It is also written that Ausar is the NTR that symbolizes
the full cycle of life, death, and resurrection into a glorified existence. When
Ausar taught humanity the practice of
agriculture Ausar was
teaching us how to access and manipulate the Ra (the Sun's lifeforce) within
vegetation and animals. When Ausar taught us to be civilized we were shown how
to see the NTR in each of us. Recognizing the NTR in each of us engenders
respect, cooperation, and love of all life. This is the basis of a civilized
society.
The Analysis: The NTRW are alive!
Ra and Ausar are
communicating (exchanging energy). Ausar is revealing its present state of being
and accomplishment while Ra listens and rejuvenates Ausar. This rejuvenation is
made more powerful by Ra burning off the stale dross and toxins accumulated by
Ausar since the last conjunction. Venus appearing retrograde places
it as the evening star
and locates Ausar in the Duat (to people this is the life after physical life
phase). Ausar is receiving very detailed, high-level instructions from Ra
dealing with eternal truths of a "mystical or occult" nature. The energy from
this interaction signifies a good time to let very few see your strengths. Make
small moves in the public sphere. Look within, review your positions, and make
plans. Take the time to gather your forces, rest, and energize yourself in
preparation for a new beginning on June 29th when we'll see Ausar emerge from
the Duat like the Bennu (Phoenix) when Venus goes direct. Ausar (Venus) will be
in a "superior conjunction" with Ra (Sun).
Those who take advantage of the mix of cosmic energies Earth is receiving from these two NTRW will be in a position to "resurrect" their own lives and those around them as well. Put yourself in good company so you can give and receive support. Remember: Ausar did not self-resurrect. Auset and Nebt-Het worked in tandem to restore the body as a focal point for consciousness. You cannot resurrect yourself without assistance! Place yourself among other NTRW (look into the hearts of the people you associate with) to get and give the full benefits from this auspicious period. It won't happen again for approximately 121.5 years. In the sidereal (galactic) charts Ausar is also consulting with Het-Heru at this time. As the House of Heru is necessary for Ausar to accomplish anything this also points to the importance of working with a key person or persons who can help bring your plans to fruition when the Duat phase in over.
THE NTRW ARE ALIVE!!!
